The Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (hereinafter - the Office) reminds: if citizens of the Russian Federation who are subject to the amendments to the Immigration Law have failed the State language test once and have applied for a repeated test before 1 September, it is MANDATORY to pass the State language a second time.

The amendments to the Immigration Law stipulate that: if the second State language test is passed successfully, the person must submit documents to the Office by 31 December this year to apply for the status of a permanent resident of the European Union.

In case the repeated State language test is also passed unsuccessfully, the person will be able to submit documents to apply for a two-year residence permit in the Republic of Latvia.

In some cases, if the State language test is not passed, the person will also be able to apply for a residence permit for two years, but only if the State language test is failed for justified reasons.  In such a case, when submitting documents for this type of permit, the application must also be accompanied by a document justifying the existence of justifiable reasons for not passing the State language test.

“We invite you to carefully follow all the requirements for submitting documents to avoid misunderstandings and unpleasant situations. In case of any doubts, you can always contact the experts of the Office in writing or get advice by calling the information line of the Office,” emphasizes Maira Roze, Head of the Office.

More information on the amendments to the Immigration Law and exceptions to the State language test for certain groups of persons is available on the website of the Office www.pmlp.gov.lv in the section “Updated information on the amendments to the Immigration Law”.

Additional information/consultation on the further process and/or the submission of documents can be obtained by sending an e-mail to mn@pmlp.gov.lv or by calling the information line of the Office 67209400.
