On 11 August 1919, the first civilian counterintelligence and internal security service of Latvia was established - the State Security Department, which was the first predecessor of Latvian State Security Service, (VDD) in terms of functions and mission. . Although during this 101 year Latvia's counter-intelligence and internal security service has experienced a variety of times and its name has been changed several times, the mission of the service – to safeguard the independence of Latvia, democratic State equipment and territorial integrity – remains unaltered.
