On Tuesday, April 20, the Cabinet of Ministers (CM) supported amendments to the Covid-19 Infection Control Law, extending the period until which foreign citizens can apply for or register a re-residence permit upon presentation of an expired travel document.
Epidemiological safety measures and travel restrictions related to limiting the spread of Covid-19 infection continue to operate even after the end of the emergency, and it is regulated by Cabinet Regulation No. 360 of 9 June 2020 “Epidemiological safety measures to limit the spread of Covid-19 infection”. As a result, foreign nationals still face difficulties in obtaining travel documents. These amendments to the law have been made to address this issue.
At present, the above-mentioned Regulations No. 360 still do not provide for the right to enter the Republic of Latvia for foreigners who have been granted or wish to apply for temporary residence permits. Therefore, it is planned to extend the validity of the decision for certain categories of foreign persons, for whom it would not be possible to renew the permit as a result of revocation of the permit.
