Last week, regarding illegal movement of cigarettes, border guards detained four Latvian citizens and removed 420 thousand smuggling cigarettes.

On Sunday, 2 August, in a forest array about 1 kilometer from the State border, border guards identified several packages wrapped in black polyethylene film containing 420 000 cigarettes “Fest” and “NZ” with Belarus in a forest array of about 1 kilometres from the State border.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated regarding the illegal movement of tobacco products in accordance with Section 190, Paragraph three of the Criminal Law.

On the other hand, four persons were arrested in cooperation with officials of the State Police in Latgale and Kurzeme Region on suspicion of moving contraband cigarettes, as part of the criminal proceedings launched on 4 and 7 August of this year.

All four men born in 1986, 1997, 1999 and 2001 have been identified as suspects and, by decision of the investigating judge, have been subjected to an appropriate means of security, detention.
