On Thursday, May 14, a Belarusian citizen who attempted to bribe border guards was detained at a border inspection post in Silene.

In carrying out border checks on persons and vehicles crossing the State border, border guards have determined that a national roadworthiness survey has not been performed in accordance with the procedures specified by the Belarusian citizen travelling in Latvia.

In order not to draw up an administrative infringement report, the driver offered a bribe of EUR 10 to the border guards.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated following the first paragraph of Section 323 of the Criminal Law and criminal proceedings have been sent to the Daugavpils Prosecutor's Office with a proposal to prosecute a suspected Belarusian citizen born in 1980. With the statement of the Prosecutor's Office of Daugavpils, a man has a fine of 10 minimum monthly salaries - EUR 4 300.

Bribery qualifies as a serious crime for which deprivation of liberty under the Criminal Law of Latvia is threatened for up to five years, temporary deprivation of liberty, forced labour or a fine of ten to two thousand minimum monthly salaries specified by the Republic of Latvia.
